Men of Valor, rise up! The life of Joseph in Genesis 37-50 is a powerful testament to this truth. At just 17 years old, Joseph faced unimaginable trials: betrayed by his own brothers, sold into slavery, and taken to Egypt in shackles (Genesis 37:28). His hardships didn’t end there. Falsely accused of rape by Potiphar’s wife, he was thrown into prison, labeled a sex offender, and left to languish through his 20s (Genesis 39:19-20). Yet, Joseph didn’t crumble. He stood firm, trusting in God’s sovereignty, and his trials prepared him for a greater purpose. By the time he was 110, Joseph had risen to become second-in-command of Egypt, overseeing a thriving economy and saving his family—and entire nations—during a devastating famine (Genesis 41:41-43; 50:20-21). Joseph’s story reminds us that trials are not meant to destroy us; they are God’s refining fire, building us into men of unshakable strength.

Joseph’s trials were not the end of his story; they were the pathway to his purpose. When his brothers sold him into slavery, he could have despaired, but he chose to trust God. When he was imprisoned on false charges, he could have given up, but he remained faithful, even serving others in prison (Genesis 40:6-8). His strength wasn’t in his own ability—it was in the God who sustained him. In Genesis 50:20, Joseph tells his brothers, “You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring about that many people should be kept alive.” This is the kind of strength SHIELD of VALOR seeks to cultivate in every man and boy: a strength that sees beyond the trial to the triumph God has planned.
Life will throw storms at you—whether it’s financial hardship, family struggles, or cultural pressures to compromise your faith. But as men of valor, we are called to stand firm, just as Joseph did. The enemy wants to break us, to make us weak and fearful, but God uses trials to build our character and prepare us for leadership. James 1:2-3 reminds us, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” Perseverance leads to maturity, and maturity leads to a strength that cannot be shaken.
